A few years ago, I decided to take marathon distance running a lot more seriously. I really enjoy the 16 weeks of training that lead up to the race day. The days are long, and the body is continuously adapting to the various levels of training.
I sought out a well-known running coach who was a top distance runner in Canada. Rick and I have been working together for 3 years, and I’ve learned a lot—and not only that, I’ve improved drastically in speed and strength. A good running coach is one that helps you improve your running form, helps you get stronger and faster, and helps you meet your goals. It’s so exciting to cross the finish line knowing you gave your all and you set a new personal best time.
I’m a firm believer that coaching can easily transition from sport to the classroom. On a recent trip to British Columbia, David Arthur (Kay Arthur’s son) and I had the opportunity to meet with two Bible study leaders who are raising up new Precept Upon Precept leaders on a regular basis.
At Westside Church in Vancouver, Nicole has created a great apprentice program for future study leaders. Future study leaders sit under an experienced leader and intentionally observe the leader. They also walk through a spiritual gifts course to determine if they have the gift of teaching. Then they’re given an opportunity to practice their teaching skills and eventually sent out to start a new class. Each new leader then starts the process of looking for their next apprentice.
But what I really love is that the leaders are never left alone. There is an ongoing coaching process where leaders share notes, discuss their students’ needs, and spend time praying for each other.
There’s a similar model in Abbotsford, BC. Angi shared with us about their process of ongoing coaching. They have a leader who is a shepherd of group leaders. This leader meets their group leaders for coffee, connects with them weekly, and continually follows up on the needs of the leaders and ministers to them. She visits the different groups throughout the year and offers encouragement and teaching tips.
In Abbotsford each week, over 200 women are coming together for their Precept Upon Precept course! It’s very encouraging to witness first-hand the excitement from the women as they dig deeper into God’s Word.
In both cases, it’s very clear that ongoing coaching breeds Multiplication. More groups and classes start as the confidence of future Precept leaders grows.
Here’s how you can get involved:
- SHARE YOUR IDEAS. An ongoing conversation here in Brantford begins with the question, “How can we serve our Bible study leaders even better?” I would love to hear directly from you on this topic. If you have ideas, please call or email me at email@example.com.
- GET CONNECTED WITH A COACH. I know the value of coaching. And I know that serving with Precept in this country can be very lonely as our leaders are spread out geographically all over the country. If you’re a leader and would like to be connected with one of our Entrust coaches, let me know and I will make sure you’re connected.
- TRAIN TO BECOME A LEADER! Would YOU like to go through the study leader evaluation process? Here are the dates for our next Entrust and Precept Upon Precept Leader Qualification courses. Sign up for one of these training events today.
