Did you think when you started this Summer Challenge in 2 Timothy that you would learn so much from just one chapter? When I begin a new study I am always amazed at how much can be learned and it excites me to continue on into the next chapter to dig deeper.

Today we arrive at Chapter 2 observing verse by verse.

Paul tells Timothy in verse 1, “Be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus.” Exactly what does that look like to you and to me? Well let’s start with what “be strong” means. Blue Letter Bible explains that “strong” means to “be strengthened” or “enabled”. Grace is defined as unmerited favour; something we don’t deserve. We are called to be strengthened as we receive blessings from God which we truly do not deserve. How much God must love us!

JessicaSo knowing this, how do we apply these words from 2 Timothy 2:1-2 to our lives? Notice that in these verses there are two instructions from Paul to Timothy. He says, “be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus” and he says “entrust these to faithful men who will be able to teach others also”. Knowing that the same God Who has provided you and me with strength and favour is the same God Who calls us to guard and teach the gospel to others.

Remember 2 Timothy 1:7 “For God has not given us a spirit of timidity, but of power and love and discipline” The same power that helps us overcome fear is the same power that gives us strength.

Thanks, Jessica, for linking together 2 Timothy 2:1 with verse 2. 2 Timothy 2:2 was the theme verse at the Seminary Thomas and I attended (looooong ago!). So it was a familiar verse, but it always stood alone in my thinking. You’ve reminded me that it’s only God’s grace – obtained as a gift – that is the source that enables us to take what we’ve learned (from faithful men like Paul, in the Word), and then pass it on to others. Unless we are standing firm in the grace that is in Christ, we cannot pass it on. It’s impossible. Only true believers are actually able to stand firm in Christ’s grace because it comes from faith in His finished work – from the Gospel. Only by becoming a “new creature in Christ,” indwelt by His Spirit, can we then pass on truth — pass on the true Gospel to other faithful men, who will be able to teach others also.

Lisa, you are so right. Without God’s grace and strength it is impossible to stand strong. I would add, that it is also impossible if you don’t know and study God’s Word and walk in the Spirit of God, to “guard the treasure” I believe we are entering a period of unprecedented persecution in North America. So many brothers and sisters in many countries are already suffering and being martyred for Christ. We can only be ready if we know the Scriptures and are correctly interpreting it.
