As a parent, it is important to lay out certain rules, instructions, guidelines etc. for my children. I have been called by God to equip them, to teach them, and to prepare them to live in society – serving God, interacting with others, and so on. As my girls have gotten older, I have come to realize that I have the most success in teaching them & giving boundaries that they respect when I explain the ‘why’ behind my rules; when I explain the reason it is so important and the possible consequences if not followed.
As I read through Paul’s charge to Timothy in 2 Timothy 4:15, I am reminded of the way I set about rules, guidelines, etc. with my girls.
Paul has taken careful time in the first 3 chapters of his letter to Timothy to encourage him and to equip him for the difficult times ahead. He has taken time to warn him about certain people who will try to distort the Word, persecute believers, and cause some to stumble. Now, Paul is reiterating to Timothy what he needs to do.
This is a very serious matter – Paul is very intentional about his words. This isn’t a ‘if you feel like it’ or ‘if you have time.’ This is Paul’s call to arms – Be ready always (in season and out)! Preach the Word of God! Reprove, rebuke, exhort!
How are you doing? Are you ready – in season and out? Are you taking the time to preach the gospel? A time will come – and has already come – where people will want to hear nothing more than that which tickles their ears. Are you doing all you can to equip others with the true and faithful Word of God?
