Drive to 60
In 1961 New York Yankee, Roger Maris would hit 61 home runs to break the previous record held by the “Sultan of Swat” Babe Ruth. To think that someone could dethrone the home run king was unheard of and thus Maris did.
Fast-forward to 1998, the 1961 record that was held for 37 years is about to be broken by not one man but two. Mark McGwire and Sammy Sosa would draw the eyes of the sports world every night in the hopes of watching them break the record. The Maris family followed the players around as they inched closer to the record. I still remember tuning in and watching as 40,000 camera flashes went off as each pitch was thrown and McGwire or Sosa hit the ball. Everybody in the stadium wanted a piece of history. Many wanted the ball that broke the record so they could auction it off and make some quick cash. On September 8, 1998 McGwire would hit a pitch of Steve Trachsel and break the record. The stadium went crazy as they witnessed a historic moment in America’s Past Time…baseball. The media hyped the home run race as the “Drive to 61.”
That was what consumed people in the summer of 1998. Do you know what is consuming the people you rub shoulders with today? Are they consumed with the pursuits of the world, the next record breaking event, the shiny Stanley Cup—don’t get me wrong, having the Maple Leafs in the playoffs for the first time in 9 years is EXCITING, but does it consume us? What other worldly pursuits are those who profess Christ caught up in?
Three months ago I committed to reading through the Bible in 90 days and as I have now almost completed the 90 days I am reading the last of Paul’s letters. What an encouraging man—a man who was consumed by the Gospel, professing Christ and attaining fruit wherever he ministered.
In Romans 1:14 Paul says, “I am under obligation both to Greeks and to barbarians, both to wise and foolish.” In Paul’s writings you can sense the urgency in which he needed—felt obligated—to share the Gospel with those who had never heard it before in case nobody else would share it. Do you share the same passion and desire to see lives transformed by the power of God? Are you burdened when you see those around you following after shiny cups and trinkets instead of pursuing the Kingdom of God?
Precept Ministries International needs you more than ever as we begin a new project called “Drive to 60!” The “Drive to 60” initiative is a special invitation for you to partner with us in ministry in the following ways:
- $60,000 to Establish 30,000 new Canadians in God’s Word.
- 60 new members for the E Team
- 60 FastTrack Discipleship Workshops held across Canada in 2013
- 60 new Discipleship groups in 2013
Now is the time for change! God is preparing this ministry for major growth in Canada. We are beginning to see the Lord bring new people through the FastTrack workshops, new study classes in 40 Minute No Homework Studies, New Inductive Study Series and Precept Upon Precept.
God is stirring His people to step up to the plate and partner in ministry. Is He calling you to partner in the Drive to 60? Prayerfully consider what you see around you and ask the Lord how you should respond to the call to go forth and make disciples hand-in-hand with Precept Ministries.
Let’s make 2013 the summer of being consumed by the kingdom of God!
